Monsma publishes article in Surfer’s Journal CIIRG member Bradley John Monsma works in literary nonfiction to communicate ecological processes and issues to general audiences. His article “Rivermouth and the Memory of Mountains” in Surfer’s Journal (Oct./Nov. 2007) connects the Santa Clara rivermouth, a renowned surf break, to the watershed that brings sediment to replenish beaches and shape the waves. The essay expands the context of surfing to include natural and cultural history, the Santa Barbara littoral cell, and the ecological effects of coastal structures and storm runoff. Also the author of The Sespe Wild: Southern California’s Last Free River (U of Nevada P, 2004) Monsma hopes to partner with other CIIRG researchers to bring important science from the islands and associated ecosystems to a broad audience.
